Turnitin has entered into a new partnership with Kyorinsha Co. Ltd. As a leading publishing services company in Japan, as well as a Japanese distributor of ScholarOne Manuscripts, a premier journal peer review tool, Kyorinsha manages the content and metadata for more than 150 English and Japanese language academic journals, published by some of the most prestigious research societies in the country.
By signing this Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), Turnitin and Kyorinsha agree to protect the intellectual property of Kyorinsha’s customers’ publications while also offering them access to Turnitin’ s iThenticate service. Access to iThenticate allows editors to check their content prior to publication, ultimately protecting the integrity and ensuring the originality of scholarly publications.
Kyorinsha and Turnitin will work together to raise awareness of issues affecting international publication ethics, research integrity, and plagiarism. The signing of the MOU allows Kyorinsha to actively promote the partnership with Turnitin, and the need for journals to carry out appropriate checks to ensure the originality of their content prior to publication.
“As a local partner of Clarivate Analytics [formerly part of ThomsonReuters], supporting their ScholarOne Manuscripts service, Kyorinsha was a logical partner for Turnitin; given its track record of successfully offering international services to local journals, and the fact that ScholarOne has an existing integration with iThenticate, there is clear synergy,” says James Thorley, Sales Director for Asia Pacific at Turnitin.
Thorley continues: “A partnership with Kyorinsha ultimately helps to strengthen editorial standards in Japan. iThenticate uses the most comprehensive content database on the market, and so gives absolute confidence when protecting one's intellectual property or reputation of a publication. Together we can help make Japanese journals and research societies aware of the importance of ensuring originality before publication and to understand the benefits of using iThenticate in their own editorial processes.”
"We are very excited about the partnership with Turnitin," says Kazumasa Watanabe, President of Kyorinsha Co. Ltd.
Watanabe continues: "The STM [scientific, technical, and medical] research communities in Japan show a keen interest in addressing plagiarism and misconduct issues. The integration between Turnitin's iThenticate and ScholarOne Manuscripts provides our customers with a solution to carry out plagiarism checking within the peer review workflow."
